Blake Bortles’ football career is now officially over.
When Blake Bortles was asked about maybe signing with any team this season on the Pardon My Take podcast on Tuesday, the former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback bluntly proclaimed his retirement.
“I haven’t played football since January,” said Bortles. I’ve officially retired now.

Since performing as Jared Goff’s backup with the Rams during the 2019 season, Bortles has not participated in an official NFL snap. Since then, the 30-year-old has visited exercise squads in Denver, Los Angeles, Green Bay, and New Orleans, among other cities.
Bortles signed a future deal with New Orleans in January, but the Saints discharged him after acquiring Andy Dalton and Jameis Winston this summer. Blake Bortles didn’t play even though he was Ian Book’s last-ditch replacement for the Saints’ Week 16 loss to the Dolphins in 2016.
On Tuesday, he claimed that he had kept his retirement a secret. Most likely, I simply kept silent a few months ago. Therefore, I suppose you guys are the foremost to hear it in public, perhaps? “
After the Jaguars picked the UCF product as the No. 3 overall preference in the 2014 NFL Draft, Bortles’ professional career grew sporadically in Jacksonville. Over an outstanding three-year span from 2015 to 2017, the gunslinger established single-season team records in passing yards (4,428), touchdowns (35), and completions (368), which were topped by an arrival in the AFC Championship Game against the Patriots.
The season after the 2017 playoff run failed to live up to expectations as Blake Bortles was benched by Week 13 to make room for Cody Kessler and was eventually traded to Los Angeles.
In 75 games over five seasons with the Jaguars, Bortles has a 24-49 record while passing for 17,646 yards on 1,561 completions, 103 touchdowns, and 75 interceptions. Each of those figures is the Jaguars’ second-best passing performance ever, behind Mark Brunell.
